Student Employment and Work Study

All Work Study funds have been awarded for the current academic year. If looking for employment please check with each department to see if they have any funds to hire as a student employee.

Skagit Valley College offers on-campus student employment through a variety of programs, including Federal and State Work Study Programs, as well as options for students without Work Study eligibility.

Work Study Student Employment

Both federal and state Work Study programs provide our students with opportunities to work part-time while attending school. Students gain valuable work experience while earning money for college. Often students enhance their course work by integrating what they learn in class with real-world work experience. Work Study is a financial aid program, and we determine eligibility for funding based on information provided on the FAFSA or WASFA applications.

Non-Work Study Student Employment

While most of our positions require Work Study eligibility, there are some departments that have additional funding for student employment. Each position description below identifies if Work Study eligibility is required or not; look for the heading “Work Study Eligibility”.

Frequently Asked Questions

Generally, to be eligible for Work Study funding, you must have completed the following steps:
– Submitted your FAFSA or WASFA for the academic year
– Indicated interest in Work Study on the application
– Are eligible for Financial Aid funding

The best first step is to check your ctcLink Financial Aid ’tile’. If you do not see any Work Study awards, that does not necessarily mean you are not eligible. You can contact the Financial Aid office or work with the department staff for the position you are interested in to review your eligibility. Don’t forget, we do have some positions that do not require Work Study eligibility!

Student employment, regardless of work study eligibility, is a real job on campus. If you successfully obtain a position within one of our departments, you will receive a regular paycheck throughout the quarter based on the employer’s pay schedule. Since you must earn these funds, they are not available at the beginning of the quarter to help you pay tuition and fees or purchase books.

This will depend on your Work Study award, or the amount of funding within the department. The average student works between 8-12 hours per week. Once you are hired, you will work with your supervisor to determine your hours. Student employees cannot work more than 19 hours per week.

The general rule is that you must be enrolled in at least 6 credits during the quarter you are receiving Work Study funding. Please work with your supervisor if you anticipate a quarter at less than half time enrollment (under 6 credits).
